The figure came from gross gaming revenue, or GGR, earned in July. Macau discloses gaming tax collections one month after the related revenue period.
Compared with July, the August tax total rose 9.5%. That marked a month over month gain for the government.
However, the same figure was 8.0% lower than what Macau collected in August 2025. The year over year drop reflects a softer gambling market compared to last year.
Gaming Taxes Remain Main Revenue Source
July’s GGR reached MOP$20.3 billion, or roughly US$2.51 billion. That revenue was 8.4% lower than July 2025.
The drop in July’s gaming revenue carried over into August’s tax collection. Lower GGR in July led to a smaller tax bill for the government the following month.
For the first eight months of 2026, Macau’s total gaming tax revenue reached MOP$66.2 billion, or about US$8.19 billion.
That total was 6.9% higher than the same eight month period in 2025. Despite the August dip, the year to date figure stayed ahead of last year’s pace.
Macau’s overall government revenue from January through August totaled MOP$76.6 billion, or US$9.48 billion.
Gaming taxes accounted for 86.4% of that total. Casino duties remain by far the largest source of public funding for the territory.
