The NCAA Division III Management Council approved a change to its student-athlete reinstatement guidelines this week. The amendment allows for reduced penalties in certain sports betting cases.
The rule took effect right after the council’s meeting on July 22. It applies only to first-time sports betting violations that do not involve integrity concerns.
NCAA officials said the goal is to encourage athletes with gambling problems to get help. At the same time, the association wants to keep protecting fair competition.
How the New Policy Works
A student-athlete can get a reduced penalty if three things are true. It must be their first sports betting violation. The case cannot involve integrity concerns. And the athlete must take part in a clinical evaluation or support program.
This amendment applies only to Division III schools. It does not change rules for Division I or Division II.
The policy does not cover serious violations like match-fixing. It also does not apply to athletes betting on their own team or sharing inside information. Those cases still face the toughest penalties.
The Management Council approved this change separately from other Division III business discussed that day. The council also reviewed reports on eligibility, championship selection, membership standards, and financial sustainability.
