Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva says online betting platforms in the country could be shut down. He said this would happen if the industry cannot show a wider social benefit.

Lula made the comment during an interview with journalist Déia Freitas. The interview aired on the Não Inviabilize channel and the As Cunhãs Podcast.

“If no one shows me a social reason for these betting companies to continue, we have to put an end to them,” Lula said. The statement adds to ongoing uncertainty around Brazil’s betting market.

The sector is still fairly new in Brazil. It has faced growing political and regulatory pressure over consumer protection and gambling harms.

Lula Acknowledges Political Resistance

Lula admitted that tougher rules on online betting would face opposition in Congress. He referred to a group of lawmakers as a “betting caucus.”
