Myanmar’s State Government has asked the public for help in finding and stopping online scams and illegal online gambling. The appeal was made through an official public announcement this week.
Officials said these crimes are not small, isolated cases anymore. They described them as organized criminal activities that cross national borders.
The government said criminal gangs have entered Myanmar illegally through border regions. From there, they run scam and gambling operations online that can harm people both inside and outside the country.
Authorities are still investigating reports that some groups are using houses and compounds as bases for these operations. These bases reportedly support internet fraud and illegal betting platforms.
Arrests Near Naik Hkwan Village
The push for public cooperation followed a tip from local residents. People in the area near Naik Hkwan Village reported suspicious activity connected to scams and gambling.
The village sits close to Thibaw Township in northern Shan State. After getting the tip, a joint team of security officials traveled to the area.
The team made inquiries and searched a house in the area. On September 15, they arrested 13 people suspected of running online scam and gambling operations.
Officials also seized equipment connected to the alleged crimes. That equipment will be handled following standard procedure.
The government has not released the names of those arrested.
