Malaysia’s Royal Police have launched a major crackdown on illegal gambling tied to the FIFA World Cup 2026, arresting dozens and seizing hundreds of thousands in cash and betting proceeds.

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail said that while current efforts focus on local syndicates, authorities are prepared to contact ASEANAPOL and Interpol if investigations lead to transnational networks.

He made the remarks after officiating the 42nd Annual General Meeting of the Retired Senior Police Officers Association of Malaysia in Cheras.

Op Soga XI: Arrests and Seizures

The crackdown is operating under Op Soga XI, a nationwide campaign that began on June 11. It is being run in coordination with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

So far, 58 people have been arrested. Police seized RM25,684 in cash and recovered RM488,582 in betting proceeds. Authorities also identified 42 websites being used to promote illegal gambling.

Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department Director Datuk M. Kumar announced the early results of the operation. The numbers show enforcement activity has been swift since the campaign launched.

The operation targets illegal betting activity connected to the World Cup, which kicked off this month. Major football tournaments have historically attracted a surge in illegal gambling across the region.
